Welcome to Year 1/2!

Autumn Overview

In Autumn 2 we will be starting a new topic called Everyday Superheroes. We will be looking at Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole and the impact their actions had on nursing. We will also be talking about how nursing has changed and the history of the NHS.

In English, we will be reading Traction Man by Mimi Grey. We will use the book as inspiration for a character description of an action hero and to write a short narrative adventure.  This book will also inspire our D & T project as we will be designing, making and evaluating a toy box for a Traction Man toy.

In maths we will be starting work on addition, subtraction and money. We will be using apparatus and jottings to show our understanding. We will also start to count in steps of 2 and continue our work on mastering our number bonds.

Remember:

  • PE is on Tuesdays and Wednesday. Please ensure your child has a PE kit in school and they have well-fitting pumps in school.
  • Homework and spellings will be sent home on Fridays and need to be returned by the following Thursday. Children will receive 5 Dojos if they return their homework by Wednesday. Children will be tested on their spellings on Thursdays.
  • Homework projects are sent home each half term. This half term our project is all about Florence Nightingale. Watch the video and find 5 facts about her!
  • Please try to support your child with their reading at home at least 4 times a week, and make a short note about their progress in their yellow reading record. Children will receive Dojos and rewards in class whenever they read at home.

If you have any questions please feel free to come and talk to us at the classroom door before or after school, send me a message on Class Dojo or send an email to year1and2lydgate@kirkleeseducation.uk.
