Welcome to Year 1/2!

Autumn Overview

In the Autumn term we will be learning all about The Great Fire of London. We will be exploring the events of the fire, how it started and how firefighting has changed since then.  We will also be looking at where London is, some famous landmarks and the four countries of the UK.  We will also be finding out how London has changed over time and building our own models to create a mini London street.

In English, we will be reading Katie in London by James Mayhew.  We will be writing a setting description of London, focussing on character descriptions and writing a diary entry for a day out in London. We will also be learning to include capital letters, full stops and adjectives in our sentences.

In Maths we will be focusing on our number skills. We will be counting, learning about place value and comparing numbers. We will then move onto addition and subtraction, money and some multiplication and division.  Please keep counting at home. The children will be counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10 as well as forwards and backwards within 100.

  • PE is on Mondays and Wednesdays. We don’t need to change into our PE kits but please ensure children are dressed appropriately and have well-fitting pumps in school.
  • Homework and spellings will be sent home on Fridays and need to be returned by the following Thursday. Children will receive 5 Dojos if they return their homework by Wednesday. Children will be tested on their spellings on Fridays.
  • Homework projects are sent home each half term. This half term our project is all about The Great Fire of London. Your project can be anything! Perhaps you could make a model, a poster, share some writing or research.
  • Please try to support your child with their reading at home at least 4 times a week, and make a short note about their progress in their yellow reading record. Children will receive Dojos whenever they read at home.

If you have any questions please feel free to come and talk to us at the classroom door before or after school, send me a message on Class Dojo or send an email to year1and2lydgate@kirkleeseducation.uk.
