Welcome to Reception / Year 1

Autumn 2 Overview

Reception children's half term topic is 'Where I Live'.  It's all about knowing about the community and locality where the children live.  They will be learning about businesses, leisure facilities, services, retail and about the people that help us and the places they work, including doctors and nurses at GP practices and hospitals, the police and the fire service.   Year 1 will be learning all about everyday people who have made a difference.  The focus will be on Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacoe and the impact they had on revolutionising hygiene in hospitals.   Year 1 will look at the health service in the past and the present, as well as learn about how to look after themselves and keep healthy.

In Maths, Reception children will be recognising and using the numbers 0-6 as well as looking at 2D and 3D shapes.  They will learn to recognise and name shapes and their properties and identify them in their environment.  They will love learning that everything is made up of shapes!  They will also learn to count, order numbers, add and subtract 1 from any number to and from 6.   Year 1 will focus on number and place value and learn to identify 'greater than' and 'less than'.  They will be ordering and sequencing objects and numbers and move on to addition and subtraction within 10.  Children will be experiencing more opportunities to reason and problem solve too!

In English, Reception children will continue to learn stories and the sequence of events in stories, so they can re-tell and perform them.  They will start with the infamous 'Bear Hunt'.  They will also learn stories that are linked to celebrations from the Bible and the Qur'an.  In Phonics, children will continue to learn Phase 2 sounds and blend them to read words.  They will also focus on correct letter formation and writing their name.   In English, Year 1 will be reading Traction Man. We will be using what we learn to write a character description and a short story about a super hero. We will also be focusing on developing our sentence writing, adding adjectives and choosing nouns to make our work more exciting.  The Art focus is design and technology and is linked to English.  Children will be making packaging for a toy!  They will design the packaging and include a bar code, product information as well as the artwork to make the toy look exciting to buy.

For Reception only - snack money will be collected every half term (£2) from each child.  This enables us to buy them not only biscuits for snack time and treats for golden time, but also helps to provide materials for cooking, play dough and other things to help with their learning.

  • Please make sure your child has well-fitting pumps and PE kits in school for PE (white t-shirt and blue or black shorts, leggings or jogging bottoms).
  • Homework and spellings will be sent home on Fridays and need to be returned by the following Thursday. Children will be tested on their spellings on Fridays.   We alternate between Maths, English and Topic. Please work with your child to complete homework, but resist doing it for them.  Homework is there for the child to complete and therefore learn new skills or secure their learning.
  • Homework projects are usually sent home each half term but we have had a little break from these since lockdown – we will let you know when the next project is ready to go out.
  • Please try to support your child with their reading at home 5 times a week, and make a short note about their progress in their yellow reading record. Children receive Dojos in class every time they read at home.
