Welcome to Year 1!

Summer Overview

This half term we are learning all about the world around us. We will be learning to name all the continents and oceans, know key capital cities and identify where the United Kingdom is on the world map. We will also learn about the our local area of Batley and compare it to Sydney, Australia. In Art we will be exploring different printing techniques and etching designs of houses onto foamboards comparing homes Batley and Sydney.

In Maths we will be completing our learning and understanding of place value up to 100, consolidating our counting up to 100 using number lines and revisiting addition.

Our English story book is Cinderella. We will be writing a diary entry and story which will include adjectives, conjunctions and past tense suffix 'ed'. All our Year 1 children will be encouraged to include capital letters, full stops and finger spaces to meet the end of year expectations.

  • PE is on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please make sure we have well-fitting pumps in school for these days, and we will let you know when the children need to start bringing their PE kits.
  • Homework and spellings will be sent home on Fridays and need to be returned by the following Thursday. Children will be tested on their spellings on Fridays.
  • Homework projects are sent home each half term – we are excited to see what the children will find out and create about an influential person at home! This could be anything, like a written diary, a 3D model or a collage.
  • Please try to support your child with their reading at home at least 4 times a week, and make a short note about their progress in their yellow reading record. Children receive Dojos in class every time they read at home.

Please free to come and talk to us at the classroom door after school if you have any questions at all!
