Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Spring Overview

This half term, we are learning all about chocolate during our topic lessons! In this unit, we will learn about where cocoa beans grow in the world and about who first discovered chocolate. We will also be designing and making some chocolate ourselves! Ask us what we have learned about the Equator – can we remember why cocoa beans are grown in America and not in the UK?

In English, we will be reading Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We will create our own setting for a short story in the factory and learn to write questions and exclamations. We are still practising including capital letters, finger spaces and full stops in our writing – please help us to remember if we forget.

In Maths we are learning about 2D and 3D shapes and we will be moving on to ordering and comparing numbers up to 50. Please help us to keep working on our number bonds to 10 at home – we keep trying to beat our own scores in our practise tests at school.

Remember:

  • PE is on Mondays and Wednesdays, and we need to bring our PE kits (white t shirt and black or blue shorts or trousers) on both of these days.
  • Homework and spellings will be sent home on Fridays and need to be returned by the following Thursday. Children will be tested on their spellings on Fridays.
  • Homework projects are sent home each half term – we are excited to see what the children learn about chocolate or Roald Dahl’s books at home! This project could be anything – like a poster, some writing or a 3D model.
  • Please try to support your child with their reading at home at least 4 times a week, and make a short note about their progress in their yellow reading record.

Please free to come and talk to us at the classroom door after school if you have any questions at all!

Mrs Stead & Mrs Daji
